Laughter Yoga explained in short.
Cultivating our own innate sense of joy through unconditional laughter and playfulness.
Think of joyful breathing, playfulness, the here and now and allowing the natural expression of joy and connection. Laughter changes our body chemistry and mindset. It’s energising yet relaxing.
And do you know Laughter Yoga can be done while standing or sitting, and is completely wheelchair friendly?
I take an approach in my delivery that eases you into laughter naturally and easily without it being forced. I see it as an exploration into laughter and discovering ways to play with it.
There are many scientifically proven benefits of laughter for our well-being but I won’t claim that you will experience any of those in my sessions.
You see, the experience in a session is entirely your own and some of that will depend on how much you engage with your own laughter, breath, play and joyfulness.
But if you want to know what the scientific research is saying about laughter then take a look below or head to the Categories section on the right side of the page and click on on Research and Recommended Reading.
This is what science tells us:
Laughter reduces the stress hormone – cortisol and increases production of the beneficial hormones of endorphins, dopamine, serotonin and oxytocin. It can lower blood pressure, relieve pain, boost our immune system, massage internal organs, oxygenise blood and all major organs giving us a great energy boost. It can lift depression, help us to diffuse painful emotions, bond with others and really lift our mood.
When you laugh deeply with someone you create a deep connection with them – a connection that words cannot explain. You laugh heart to heart, soul to soul. You become one, you become family.
You don’t need a reason to laugh and you don’t need to be happy to laugh.

Why Laughter Yoga?
“Why Laughter Yoga” I hear you say. Though we may well have spontaneous laughter in the course of our day it is not sufficient enough to bring on the physiological and biochemical changes that are so beneficial to our bodies.
To get the real, scientifically proven benefits of laughter we need to laugh for 10-15 minutes and incorporated with the breathing exercises this increases oxygen levels in our blood, improves blood circulation, helps muscles to relax and can help relieve stress. The release of endorphins caused by the laughter lifts our mood, helps to relieve pain and boosts our immune system.
The relaxed, safe atmosphere of Laughter Yoga sessions allows you to let go of your inhibitions and have a loud, hearty belly laugh.
Of course, following Laughter Yoga, your lifted spirits will have positive effects on those around you too and can also improve your creativity and productivity. What’s not to like about it?
Come along and give it a go!

As we are currently unable to laugh in-person due to covid restrictions I am running an online laughter mini session.
Initially set up to support those of us currently under lockdown measures I’m opening it up to everyone. We can all benefit from more laughter in our lives!
This is not traditional Laughter Yoga filled with set exercises but a more embodied approach.
At the beginning of the session I will take you through some gentle and joyful breathing exercises to warm us up and then I will introduce that weeks scenario. The scenario is intended to get us into a playful spirit and we will then simply allow the laughter and playfulness to ebb and flow. No forcing or coercing with exercises or jokes.
After around 10 – 15 minutes I will guide you into a meditation to ground you.
The only rule is once the session starts there will be no talking. Time will be allocated at the end of the session to chat and, if you wish, share your experience.
Laughter not only lifts our mood but it also supports our immune system and is a great self care practice.
Whether you’re feeling overwhelmed with anxiety or simply would like to inject a little more joy into your day you’ll find laughter is a little life hack. It slows down the production of cortisol associated with anxiety and stress and provides the right environment within our body to release four amazing neurochemicals namely – endorphins, oxytocin, dopamine and seratonin.
I intend for this offering to be as free flowing and authentic as possible.
This is an opportunity for you to explore your relationship with laughter and playfulness and notice how it feels.
These sessions are suitable for all ages and abilities and no previous experience is necessary – just an openness to the experience. The scenarios presented may include triggers for you. You are free to leave the session at any time or simply play with your trigger leaning in to how it feels.
